The Lander Group’s 21st Avenue
Lofts win 2004 CUE Award
Minneapolis—The 21st Avenue Lofts,
a Lander Group condominium development in Minneapolis’ Seward
Neighborhood, was one of twelve projects citywide to earn an Award
from the Committee on Urban Environment (CUE) for strengthening
and beautifying the urban environment. The company represents the
only for-profit recipient in this year’s grouping –
in general, CUE Awards are bestowed upon community service projects
and outstanding citizen actions. Lander also received a CUE Award
in 1994 for its rehab of a brick retail/residential building at
34th & Hennepin.
21st Avenue Lofts consists of seven new homes
– two side-by-side duplexes, a two-story townhouse which faces
21st Avenue across an interior courtyard, and two loft units located
above a garage on the rear of the site that provides parking for
all seven units. The goal of the project, completed in 2003, was
to “deliver high-end Lander Group design in new affordable
homes that take advantage of the amenities of the flourishing Seward
Neighborhood. According to the CUE Committee, that goal was clearly
accomplished, noting that the project is “an excellent example
of good design on a low budget” and proof that “contemporary
design can work in an older neighborhood.” Further, it noted,
“The unique architectural style and low new-construction pricing
($105/sq. ft.) appeal to young design-oriented professionals, the
project’s key buyer niche.”
The 21st Avenue Lofts have also been recognized
with the 2003 Builder’s Choice Award for Design Detail and
the 2003 Best in American Living Award for Townhome Under 2,000
Square Feet.
The Lander Group’s project partners

The selection of the CUE Award winners was

architect; Ann Voda, architect; Rebecca Yanisch, business person;
and Ann Calvert, redevelopment coordinator.
The CUE Awards are a project of the Committee
on Urban Environment, a citizen advisory organization working to
recognize and promote urban quality, aesthetics, and livability.
Since 1968, CUE has recognized designs and efforts that strengthen
and beautify the urban environment.
